Existing Environment
Current Infrastructure
Lucerne Publishing has a virtualized on-premises server farm that has Windows Server 2016 Standard deployed as the operating system to both the physical hosts and the virtual machines. The virtual machines move dynamically between the physical hosts and run a variety of workloads to support the company. On average, there are more than 10 virtual machines running on a physical host simultaneously.
Lucerne Publishing uses Microsoft SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2012, and SQL Server 2016 to support its line-of-business applications and other key products.
Lucerne Publishing uses Microsoft SharePoint Server 2016 to host the company’s intranet, to which all employees have access, as well as the company’s customer -facing website. Internal and external communications are delivered by using Microsoft Exchange Server 2016 and Microsoft Skype for Business Server 2015.
Current IT Expertise
The IT team has worked together for many years and has years and has considerable expertise in the products that are currently deployed. The IT team does not have experience working with Microsoft Azure or Azure solutions.
Current Licensing Solution
Lucerne Publishing has an active Enterprise Agreement (EA). the company licenses Microsoft Enterprise CAL Suite for all users and purchases all of the licenses
for the server products deployed to the server farm through the existing EA. Lucerne Publishing purchases core licenses for SQL Server that are covered under
active Software Assurance (SA).
All the licenses for Windows Server and SQL Server are currently assigned to active workloads.
Requirements
Business Goals
Lucerne Publishing wants to evaluate whether to run some of its server workloads in Azure. the company plans to start a six-week pilot projects that will duplicate five of the SQL Server workloads currently in the on-premises datacenter.
If the pilot is successful, the IT team plans to migrate some SQL Server workloads to Azure and to maintain a hybrid solution for at least the next year. Lucerne Publishing wants to identify the most cost-effective way to maintain the hybrid solution.
Planned Changes
Lucerne Publishing plans to set up a publishing portal where 500 partners and 200 suppliers can access a set of resources.
The company plans to use a partner to implement and manage all cloud resources.
Licensing Requirements
Lucerne Publishing wants to pay for cloud services based on consumption.
