  1. Backup software usually has a validate option to compare the finished backup to the actual files to ensure they match exactly. I believe the correct answer is D.

Nowhere is their mention of a need to recover quickly. More importantly backups wouldn’t restore faster to a VM than they would to a PC – it would be speed limited by the interface the backup device uses. (i.e. SATA3, USB2.0 etc.) so read speed of the device matters here.

  2. B – Configure the backups to restore to virtual machines FOR QUICK RECOVERY – seems to imply that recovery will be to the VM server instead of the failed server. But the question doesn’t say that recovery MUST be to the original server.
Not A – Frequently restore the servers from backup files and test them – so they would be FREQUENTLY offline.
Not C – rerunning failed backup jobs doesn’t guarantee that the backup will succeed on the next attempt.
Not D – this answer says alerts “when backups fail” – doesn’t say when “backup JOBS fail” – says “when backups fail.”
Not E – Although a best practice, storing copies of the backups off-site won’t ensure that the backups will work.

  3. D – The question says “ensure the backups will work if needed” — the only way to ensure a backup will actually work is to periodically test it – best done on a virtual machine configured identical to the actual server that was backed up. But the answer choices don’t offer that option.
Not (A) — It’s impractical to frequently restore the servers to test the backups. So next best thing is to issue a notification if any backup job fails. Then you will know that particular backup would not work to do the restore.
