think about your modem as the power supply coming from the ground– then you have the switches, routers and workstations but the firewall is the first line of defense and is the one who the internet(outside) faces.
besides you do not have to configure a modem. just plug it in and turn it on. routers-switches-firewalls require administration
Modem is generally considered part of the ISP’s network. Modem is the connection to the internet. Firewall is the gateway to the network, not the modem.
