Cisco NSF/SSO builds on the earlier work known as Route Processor Redundancy (RPR) and RPR Plus (RPR+). Through the use of redundant intra-chassis hardware (redundant route processors) and the separation of the control plane from the data plane, continuous packet forwarding with zero packet loss can now be achieved, even if a hardware or software problem causes a route processor failure.
