  1. A Layer 3 switch allows you to swap out a router to allow VLAN routing directly from the switch. Removing a device plus wiring. Much more cost effective, essentially. Before that the router on a stick was basically how people did it. They added a router beside it to allow for the VLAN’s to communication. The layer 3 replaced that. You just get a layer 3 switch if your design has VLAN routing as being implemented.

Having the router in the answer is a bit like saying replace a router with a router, so hence why people get a little confused and think the question is how can you do it VLAN routing, obviously one way is via a router.

    1. Correct answer is C

The question already refers to the router cause its the router that uses subinterfaces for VLAN routing.

You could also rephrase the question as “Which type of device can be replaced by a router?” which makes C the correct answer.
