Per CompTIA’s own 601 lab, the chmod 644 step is not included.
In the lab for creating SSH keys, they do the ssh-keygen -t rsa, ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub user@server, and then ssh user@server.
In fact, not so sure the ssh root@server step makes sense, it should be user@server – you just made a key for user, not root.
