The mechanism used to clear the cache pool of non-cache worthy data is Access Based Eviction (ABE). ABE utilizes a heat map to determine which blocks to evict from cache – hot blocks are retained and cold blocks are evicted.
NOTE: Access Based Eviction (ABE) is used with HPE Nimble Storage OS 2.2 and later. Prior to HPE Nimble Storage OS 2.2 HPE Nimble Storage OS used First In First Out (FIFO).
There are several factors as to why ABE has replaced FIFO:
ABE provides a more efficient use of cache by ensuring the most important data remains in cache
Enables 100% cache hit for specific blocks
