Which of the following uses of deduplication could be implemented to reduce the backup window?

The data backup window has expanded into the morning hours and has begun to affect production users. The main bottleneck in the process is the time it takes to replicate the backups to separate severs at the offsite data center.
Which of the following uses of deduplication could be implemented to reduce the backup window?
A. Implement deduplication at the network level between the two locations
B. Implement deduplication on the storage array to reduce the amount of drive space needed
C. Implement deduplication on the server storage to reduce the data backed up
D. Implement deduplication on both the local and remote servers

  1. Further thought on this – If the storage array is a tape backup system (most tape backup systems consist of an array of tapes, so could be called a “storage array”) and not an array of disks then it would consume much more time trying to de-dup the backup tapes stored there. So answer (B) would be wrong. The question says that the problem lays with the REPLICATION time of the backups to the offsite location. So we can assume that the initial backups have already been created and are now ready to be copied/transmitted (replicated) to the offsite location. It makes a HUGE difference whether the storage array holding the backups is disk or tape. If the array was a tape system then answer (C) would be best, as the “server storage” contains the original data pre-backup – and is on disk – so the de-dup would execute much quicker – and the smaller de-duped data would be backed-up, then take less time to transmit to the offsite location. Bottom line: not enough information given in the question – it’s crucial to know if the “storage array” is tape or disk. I ASSUME tape, so (C) is right.

  2. B. deduplication on the storage array. C is wrong because it says “reduce the data backed up”, implying that we need to get rid of some of the data. A and D are both wrong for obvious reasons.
