Who creates a Product Backlog item’s estimate?
A. The Development Team after clarifying requirements with the Product Owner.
B. The Product Owner with input from the Development Team.
C. The most senior people in the organization, including architects and subject matter experts.
D. The Scrum Master.
E. The Development Team, alone.
A is the right answer as estimates are only created when Product backlog refinement is done (Which is basically clarifying requirements with product owner and understood clearly by Development team and all the answers provided by Product owner) post which only estimations are created by Dev team.
Why A and not E??
scrum guide says “The Development Team is responsible for all estimates. The Product Owner may influence the Development Team by helping it understand and select trade-offs, but the people who will perform the work make the final estimate.”
PO “may” …
How can it be both? answer E makes answer A untrue.
The only people responsible for creating estimates ARE the development team. For the estimates in the SPRINT backlog, they are the ones who have created the tasks, so of course, they are also the only ones needed to create the estimates. HOWEVER…… for the Product Backlog, they MAY need help from the Product Owner to clarify a bit in order to do so. If the user story, test case, use case etc is a bit unclear, the PO is the person who can help them understand it better.
We’re talking here about the PRODUCT backlog, so yes, they may need input or feedback or clarification from the Product Owner in order to make their estimates on the PRODUCT backlog.
SO …. A … IS the right answer
