Which of the following statements are correct regarding project management? (Select two.)
A. A project can be part of an organization’s program management.
B. An organization’s portfolio will include programs.
C. A program has a defined start and finish.
D. An organization’s portfolio is a temporary and unique endeavor.
E. A project portfolio will be managed under program management.
Correct answers: A & B.
I don’t understand why “A” is not a correct answer. In PMBOK6 page 49 (1.2.3.1 line 2) a project can be standalone or part of a program, so I assume that includes an organizations program management. Figure 1-3 diagrams this.
As for “B” I have not found a ref that says a portfolio must have programs, in fact Figure 1-3 shows examples of portfolio components being “Operations” and “Projects” which implies to me you could have a group of those without the program element.
To further confuse (or support this is a “bad” question”) the same figure in PMBOK6 shows a Program C having an Operations component. Operations are ongoing and which means they don’t have a defined end point, so that makes answer C suspect.
So I find more solid support for answer “A” in PMBOK6. Before doing this research I was going to say A and C and I feel those are stronger answers. I will say the diagram in PMBOK6 did include the Program C as having both Operations and Projects, but if the Operations component is ongoing one would assume it’s parent program is as well. (ambiguous and subjective imho)
For those taking the CompTIA Project Plus exam PK0-004 is it recommended to just memorize the answers even if you find a question that is truly wrong (not referring to this question), but a CPI<1 example that said the project was "under budget – that is obviously an error. I have also seen suspect questions regarding Matrix vs Projectized Management Structures that did not align with popular and respected study guides for Project + or PMBOK. I would be good to know if certain questions have been corrected in the actual certification exam, or thrown out because an error was found in various exam banks. Questions such as this one would throw out, or provide some reference to PMBOK that support it.
I would say A and B… not to say that Programs don’t have defined start and finishes, I’m sure they do… the answer is almost certainly B and C here… but it’s a really bad question… choose the most right or the least wrong…
